the
EUJO way
The Jazz Orchestra currently consists of a large sax section, comprising of
two altos and two tenor saxes and a baritone sax, a brass section comprising of four trombones and four trumpets, and a four piece rhythm section having piano, guitar, bass and drums. We also have a vocalist, and have recently had guest vocalists at some of our gigs following the success of jazz idol.
The band also has an MD that varies year by year from being a band
member to a non-student professional musical director. Over the last ten or so years eujo has been steadily changing and updating its repertoire to include the latest and most challenging arrangements. All our charts are chosen for the quality of their arranging; we play modern jazz, encompassing straight-ahead jazz tunes, standards arranged in classic big band style, together with a number of more modern styles such as latin and jazz funk.
Eujo usually plays a couple of gigs every semester, and for the last four years has hosted the award winning event 'Jazz Idol' - winner of the 'Best Event' oscar at the University Society Awards for the inaugural Jazz Idol (2004).
Venues vary gig by gig but the band mainly performs in either the
Jazz Bar or the Cabaret Bar in the Pleasance Courtyard. The band has also used the university venue in Potterrow for the last three Jazz Idol events, with huge success, both for the band and for the participating vocalists |
